Lacrosse, often hailed as “the fastest game on two feet,” is a sport steeped in tradition and infused with energy, teamwork and finesse. Originating centuries ago as a Native American game, lacrosse has since evolved into a global phenomenon. The benefits of participation in lacrosse for youth encompass every aspect of growth and development—from health and fitness to resilience, leadership and a sense of belonging. “It has been amazing to watch my son grow as an individual while he has played Lacrosse,” says Tara, parent of a young member of the Chico Rebels lacrosse team.
Lacrosse is a community sport
If you ask just about any Chico resident if they were or are a Chico Rebel, you might be surprised how many community members have current or previous ties to the Chico Rebels Lacrosse club. Chico Rebels Lacrosse has been a part of the Chico Community for over 20 years and has hosted youth and high school community club teams. Many of the Chico Rebels Lacrosse players have gone on to play on traveling teams, in college and university leagues (nearly 20 ranging across the nation), and even in International World Lacrosse Competitions. “My son played with the Rebels since age 9 and went on to play four years of Div 2 college,” says David, Chico Rebel parent. “Never would have happened without the Rebels.”
Chico Rebels is a volunteer-run, nonprofit organization providing youth lacrosse to Chico and surrounding communities and is a member of the Northern California Junior Lacrosse Association (NCJLA) and USA Lacrosse. Serving young boys grades 3-12, they are building strong, powerful and kind young men in a club atmosphere that promotes the team, player safety and improving the individual athlete. Their Season begins Feb. 1 and runs through late-May, with summer and fall clinics for boys and girls of all ages as well as a competitive spring season.
Lacrosse teaches invaluable skills, engenders emotional maturity
With its fast pace and need for precise stick handling, lacrosse develops fine and gross motor skills. Youth learn to control the lacrosse stick, cradle the ball, aim accurate passes and execute powerful shots, all while running and reacting to the play. This multi-tasking fosters hand-eye coordination and agility, skills that are transferable to other sports and everyday activities.
A team sport, Lacrosse requires constant communication and collaboration. Youth learn how to work together, listen to others and find their place within a group. This teamwork extends off the field, teaching young athletes’ empathy, respect and cooperation—qualities essential for success in any community or workplace.
A path to college and beyond
For many, lacrosse can be a pathway to further education. Numerous high schools and colleges offer lacrosse scholarships, allowing talented players to pursue higher learning while continuing to compete. Chico Rebels has seen nearly 20 athletes go on to compete at schools such as Chico State, UC Davis, Grand Canyon, St. Mary’s College of Maryland, the University of Montana and Hartford Community College in Maryland, to name a few. Such scholarships encourage players to maintain high academic standards and strive for excellence in both academics and athletics.
Lacrosse is more than a gateway to physical fitness—it is a crucible for mental fortitude, social connection and personal growth. “I love lacrosse and believe it will be a benefit to our whole community,” says local lacrosse parent, Tara.
