With Mother’s Day rapidly approaching, it’s time to start brainstorming creative ways to thank Mom for all of her love and support. Going out to eat is a traditional choice, but it may not be the best idea, especially if the mom has young children.
From creating one-of-a-kind ceramics to indulging in Mom’s favorite edible treat, hiking to a waterfall together or perusing art, the North State has a bounty of options to enjoy fresh air, the wonders of spring, and bring a smile to mom’s face. No matter the budget, this list has options for everyone.
Visit some waterfalls
McCloud Falls is a spectacle of water, rock, lush moss and secluded peace. Out of the three different waterfalls here, Middle Falls is the most popular with a 50-foot drop. Entrance to all of the falls is free, and the nearby Fowler Campground will be open by Mother’s Day, if a family wants to plan a short camping trip. McCloud Falls is just five miles from McCloud, and there is a mile-long hiking trail from the campground to Middle Falls, which is a part of the McCloud River Trail. A mixture of dogwoods, wildflowers, Douglas firs and other flora line the river. After an abundantly wet winter, the spring bloom should be equally abundant.
See wildflowers up close
For a stunning display of native wildflowers in an easy to navigate indoor venue, the 30th Annual Siskiyou County Mother’s Day Wildflower Show rounds them all up at the Yreka Community Center on May 14. Hosted by the Klamath and Shasta-Trinity National Forests, in partnership with the Shasta Chapter CNPS, this free show runs from 10am-4pm and offers an up-close look at dozens of native flowers, complete with information on each flower’s scientific and common names.
Get artistic at All Fired Up
Allow mom and the whole family to unleash their inner artists with a personalized ceramics activity at All Fired Up, a ceramic and art studio at 939 Butte Street in Redding. The studio will be open on Mother’s Day from 1-5 p.m. with a range of unique pieces to choose from, including staple dish ware and seasonal goodies. There is no need to book ahead and no extra fee for painting. All tools are provided, and there are lots of designs on display for inspiration. After everyone’s pieces are done, you leave them to be fired in the kiln then pick them up a week later and enjoy the memories for years to come.
Visit McConnell Arboretum and Turtle Bay Exploration Park
Discover a tranquil and picturesque landscape in Redding when the family embarks on a near-to-home outdoor adventure to the McConnell Arboretum, accessible by crossing the glass and granite deck of the Sundial Bridge over the Sacramento River. The Arboretum lets the family wander through 200 acres of native plants and trees, nestled within the captivating Turtle Bay Exploration Park, complete with a mosaic children’s garden. This is a great opportunity to bring a picnic and relax for the afternoon. After the picnic, the family can enjoy a leisurely walk along the one-mile loop that surrounds the arboretum and is a part of the Sacramento River Trail. For even more adventure, visit Turtle Bays’ extensive museum and ongoing animal shows, with endless opportunities for learning and exploration. Turtle Bay Exploration Park is open from 10am-4pm.
Spend time at the Chico Art Festival
During Mother’s Day weekend, the free 10th Annual Chico Art Festival will be in full swing with creativity, music and artisan crafts. A yearly celebration of the North State’s vibrant arts scene, this festival is packed with entertainment for everyone including kid-friendly activities. Wander through booths and galleries, and grab some food and drinks at one of the many food trucks. The Festival runs from 4-8pm May 12 and 10am-5pm May 13 at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 2341 Floral Avenue in Chico.
