Sisters Meskerem (left, 5) and Mihret (right, 3) love to spend time in the outdoors with parents Nancy Swift and Tom Chandler … especially when mom and dad do the walking for them. Nancy is the executive director of an economic development nonprofit while Tom is a professional writer and marketing consultant; the family lives in Mount Shasta.

Spending time on her family’s ranch with her sons is Becky Gruenwald, a North State business owner and mother of 17-year-old Lane (in gray), 14-year-old Tate (back row, right), and 12-year-old Wade (front). Becky and her family have enjoyed owning and operating Country Pumpkins in Orland for 14 years. They also enjoy whitewater rafting, kayaking, raising animals, fishing, and triathlons.

Three Socks, an American quarter horse, enjoys the company of Greta Hanelt and her 4-year-old daughter Cora. Now living in Mt. Shasta, Greta grew up in Montana’s ranch country. She has a great love for horses and has been horseback riding since she was 3 years old. Young Cora began riding at age 2.

Gordon Lee, age 8, is a student at Blue Oak Charter School in Chico. He enjoys baseball, playing the piano and violin, and playing with LEGO bricks. He also loves to read fun books and drawing.

Siblings Avary and Spencer Abdo enjoy open space while on a hike in Chico’s Upper Bidwell Park. Spencer enjoys writing stories, and Avary loves working with animals.

Entrepreneur Carl Sommer and his children, Troy, age 8, and Annabella, age 10. Both children attend Chico Country Day School. Carl is the creator and owner of In Motion Fitness in Chico; his hobbies include CrossFit, rollerblading, biking and walking on his hands! As an active family, Carl and his children enjoy hiking, playing at In Motion Fitness, and going to the beach.

Mom and artist Raina Pratt, and daughter Suraya, now 2 years old, visiting friends in French Gulch. Raina and her husband Brian moved to Redding in 2009 from Montana, with their boys Elias, now 6, and Kendrick age 4. In May they are expecting their fourth child – a girl!
