North State Parent offers our annual Helping Hands holiday section to highlight extraordinary organizations who serve our North State community in meaningful ways. These special organizations assist individuals and families (including animals) in meaningful ways.
Read about each organization to learn how your family can help. We hope you’ll feel inspired, and will consider making one or more of these organizations a part of your holiday gift-giving or “giving back” plans, whether volunteering, adopting a pet, donating money or providing needed items.
Sponsoring something you believe in can go a long way in demonstrating to your children that the holidays, whether Christmas, Hanukkah or Kwanzaa, are not primarily about “getting” but are about sharing and giving.
North State Parent would love to hear how you incorporate “giving back” into your holiday plans. Find North State Parent on Facebook and let us know, or email Publisher Pamela Newman at pn@northstateparent.com.

Women’s Resource Clinic provides information about parenting, adoption and the risks of abortion. We are committed to supporting women who have experienced or are experiencing unplanned pregnancies. We also offer ultra sounds, pre-natal and pregnancy information.
Our nationally acclaimed parenting program “Earn While You Learn” is open to women who are pregnant or who have children (up to toddler age). While the women are taught parenting skills, they earn “Boutique Credits” which they use to purchase items at our Baby Boutique. We also offer eight-week Post Abortion Recover Groups for women who have had abortions and are experiencing physical, emotional and spiritual complications.
Our clients in the “Earn While You Learn” program are in need of new baby items for newborn to size 3T, clothing, furniture, toys, diapers and gift cards to Target, Wal-Mart or K-Mart for larger items. All donations are tax deductible. We also welcome volunteers (call or stop by our clinic for more information).

Golden Umbrella provides services to seniors and people with disabilities. Our programs support seniors and enhance quality of life by connecting them with services that maintain a level of independence and prevent premature placement into a skilled nursing facility. Louise Rall, the Founder of Golden Umbrella, recognized the great need for senior services in Shasta County.
Golden Umbrella collaborates with Owens HealthCare on a Giving Tree program, which provides support to seniors during the holidays by hosting trees. The gift preferences for each senior is added to a tree ornament and placed on holiday trees displayed at local stores. Last year, 650 seniors were adopted in our community.
In addition to the Giving Tree program, individuals can contribute to Golden Umbrella by referring clients at risk for long-term placement to Adult Day Healthcare. Our staff is trained to meet and identify the needs of our clients and refer them to resources, information and programs.
