This year, the fastest moving vehicles at the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association (CHVA) Father’s Day Car Show in Yreka will be made of cardboard boxes. These souped-up racing machines will be modified from “stock,” with love and great care from local kids and their pit crews, to run at optimum speed and maximum coolness for use at the eighth annual Box Car Race at The Siskiyou Golden Fairgrounds on Sunday, June 19.
The races take place 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. next to Winema Hall in the Carnival Lot, where the field will be festooned with checkered pennants, a starting line, and a pit stop area where all racers are required to step out of their cars, take off their shoes, drink water, and put their shoes back on before stepping back in their cars to finish the race. There will be a repair garage in case of an occasional off-track excursion, and the finish line will be stocked with trophies and prizes for every participant.
The Box Car Races are part of CHVA’s Father’s Day Pancake Breakfast and Car Show, which runs from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the fairgrounds. Admission is free; a fundraising breakfast catered by The Garden Party will be served in Winema Hall from 8 a.m. to 11 a.m. ($8/adults, $4/child under age 12).
On June 18, families who wish to build a box car can stop by the Yreka Community Center at 201 South Broadway from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. during the Gold Rush Days celebration. Supplies of paint, stickers, decals, and colored and patterned duct tape will be supplied to make an amazing car for use in the next day’s races. Boxes will be available or participants can bring their own. A pre-made car is not required to take part in the races, though; kids who don’t have cars can borrow one on the day of the event.
This fun annual experience is co-sponsored by the Hub Communities Family Resource Center, the Contemporary Historical Vehicle Association, Siskiyou Early Head Start, Siskiyou Super Dads, and the Yreka Community Resource Center, with support from First 5 Siskiyou and the Community Services Council.
Don’t miss this opportunity to build something creative together and to come get your “Vrrrrrrrmmmm” on!
