Originally born in rainy western Washington State, I never experienced much snow or the fun things that come with it, like skiing and ice skating. Luckily I have had family in Mount Shasta, so I enjoyed some snow fun once a year when visiting. When my mom and I moved to Mount Shasta in the summer of 2011, I could hardly wait to go ice skating, as skating is my favorite winter sport (and the one I barley ever got to do). Unfortunately, the year we moved to Mount Shasta was the first year, after ten years running, that the Siskiyou Ice Rink did not open!
This was a big disappointment for me and many other people … but why was it closed? The ice rink is an outdoor rink in a beautiful setting, but without a roof the ice is more susceptible to melting in the sun. Increased costs of operation contributed to the rink’s closure.
This year the rink will be open for a seven-week winter season with help from the community group Friends of the Rink (FOR). I want to help too, so the rink can stay open long-term. One idea posed to cut down the cost of electricity is to build a roof to protect the ice from sun and snow, as well as putting up solar panels to generate affordable electricity.
As an artist and as a member of my community, I’ve decided to take action by selling one of my art pieces as cards, and will donate 100% of the profits towards obtaining a rink roof and solar panels.
If you would like to help with this cause, you can purchase my “Ice Skate Post” holiday greeting card at a variety of Mount Shasta stores and galleries, including the Siskiyou Arts Council Gallery, 418 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd.; A Melo Place, 417 Chestnut St.; Alpine Originals, 304 N. Mt. Shasta Blvd.; and the Siskiyou Ice Rink at Shastice Park during the skate season.
The cards can also be purchased online at my Esty shop at http://www.Etsy.com/shop/RiverJewett
A list of all local locations to buy the card will be available on the site.
Single cards are $2 each or $15 for 10 cards at local locations; online ordering (includes shipping and handling) is $25 for 12 cards.
Please spread the word and help support the rink!

Do your card prices include envelopes? I suspect they do even though it’s not mentioned. Very cute cards. I think they would make perfect Holiday Cards, I’ll get some! The Holidays are right around the corner.

What a thoughtful and long-lasting gift to the community. Thank you for your generosity. The rink needs this kind of contribution. I hope you get lots of good skating weather!
