 Teen Centered/Shasta App
Lets Teens Find Resources
From Their Phones
By Michael Burke
Executive Director, Pathways to Hope
Pathways to Hope for Children, Shasta County’s child abuse prevention coordi- nating council, operates the Anderson Teen Center and will soon open a teen center in Redding. With our focus on increasing hope and resiliency in teens
in the community, we have created a mobile phone app just for these teens. This app, Teen Centered/Shasta, was made possible through grants from the Shasta County Interagency Narcotics Taskforce and the Shasta County Office of Education.
Resources and help are just a tap away
We all know teens are glued to their phones. Now they can browse for resources right here in Shasta County that are specific to their needs. In developing the app, we partnered with IRG Marketing, a Redding business specializing in mobile apps and website design. Along with IRG President Larry Ramsey, we interviewed more than 20 teens at the Anderson Teen Center to see what they wanted in an app, and were able to deliver on most of their requests.
Teens requested access to resources for friends in need, so within two taps teens who are depressed or have friends that need help can be talking to someone from the suicide prevention hotline.
If there is teen dating violence, teens can reach out to One SAFE Place through the app. College Options is just a tap away so teens can learn about admission, the FAFSA and available education options.
Teens requested job information, so the app connects to the Smart Workforce Cen- ter. During teen center hours, teens can “chat” directly with teen center staff about any- thing, and there is even information specifically geared towards teens about COVID-19, homeless resources and so much more!
Easy to download and start using
We are excited to get this app out there for the public and encourage all teens and parents of teens in Shasta County to download it and start using it.
From the Apple App store, the app can be downloaded at: https://apps.apple.com/ us/app/teencentered/id1575603908
From the Google Play Store, the app can be downloaded at: https://play.google.com/ store/apps/details?id=com.app_teencentered.layout&hl=en_US&gl=US
Organizations that cater to teens are able to add to the app’s event calendar, provide links to services and engage with youth in meaningful ways. For more information on this, call Michael Burke at 530-241-5816 or email: mburke@hopeshasta.org.
