On the Cover: Men today are redefining the role of father, dismissing the idea that fathers are best known for roughhousing and silly jokes. Today’s fathers are partners and teachers, support systems and active participants in each aspect of their family’s day to day lives. Kevin and Leah joyfully share the responsibilities of raising their children Eliana and Owen and both parents a vital part of the dynamic duo of parenthood.
Photography: Photographer Katie Drake snapped this darling photo at Book Family Farm, Katie’s childhood home and favorite backdrop. Katie, who has a husband and three children, specializes in child and family portraits.

    DEAR READERS
I must tell you how excited and pleased I was when North State Parent editorial team suggested we run an article about the author Beverly Cleary!
When I was a child, Beverly Cleary’s chapter books were a part of the reason I learned to love to read. I would stay up late with a flashlight, un- der the covers so as not to wake my little sister, and read her stories. This continues to be a fun memory to hold.
Ramona, Henry, Mrs. Quimby and all of Beverly Cleary’s characters delighted me with their situa- tional antics and ensuing hilarity. Louis Darling’s il- lustrations evoked a deep affection for the animals in the stories, whether a skinny dog or a cuddly kitten. His drawings melted me then and still do.
Has the slower pace of Staying Home afforded you more time to read aloud to your children? I hope so! Reading to our family is one of the most dynamic and educational gifts we can give as parents. Utilize your library or trade with friends to discover entire worlds through books!
Happy Summer,
And the wonderful NSP team members
