After the “big feelings” of the holidays sometimes kids can get a little bored or blue. In the North State, there are dozens of fun options for the whole family to enjoy over winter break.
TAKE A WALK
Short and sweet, these easy hikes are the perfect way to enjoy fresh air and a taste of nature.
Lithia Park Loop Trail, Ashland, OR. This 2.1 mile partially paved trail is stroller and kid friendly in the heart of town. Duck ponds and Japanese garden. Picnic tables and restrooms available. Dogs not allowed. Parking within Lithia Park area.
One Mile Recreation Area, Chico. A 1.3 mile paved kid friendly hike or bike trail with forest and river views. Park at Bidwell Park parking lot off Vallombrosa Ave.
Chico Seed Orchard, Chico. Beautiful nature conservancy with 1 mile paved loop trail for little hikers. Bamboo forest, bridges, stream. Bathrooms, picnic tables, and stroller friendly. Take Skyway (Exit 383). Drive a quarter of a mile and turn right on Dominic Drive. At the end of the road turn left onto Morrow Lane then take the next right onto Cramer Lane.
Sisson Meadow Trail Loop, Mt., Shasta. A one mile paved trail ideal for bird watching. Wheelchair, stroller, dog and kid friendly. Heavy boots recommended. Paved parking off East Alma St.
Brad Freeman Trail. Oroville. This three mile dirt trail follows Thermalito Diversion Pool and through a long tunnel. Bathrooms, water fountains, and stroller friendly. Park at the end of Old Ferry Road.
Inks Creek Point, Red Bluff. Occasionally rocky unpaved 3.8 mile unpaved trail. Good for dogs and older children. Gorgeous views of the Sacramento River and Lassen Peak. May see Tundra Swans and other waterfowl at different times of the year. 19300-19316 Jelly’s Ferry Rd.
Arborerum Loop Trail. Redding. This 2.1 mile paved trail circles the McConnell Arboretum with Sacramento River views and water fowl. Kid friendly. Road biking and dogs on leash allowed. Picnic tables, bathroom, water stops along the way. Park off Sundial Bridge Drive at Turtle Bay Exploration Park.
