2015: “Why is music important to our world? Why is it important to you? What experiences in music have helped you grow as a person?”
Winning music essay by Sean Bostrom:
Today, the music in our society reveals what basic beliefs and morals people have. It is hard to say what percentage of Americans listen to popular music, but you can be assured, it’s most of us. Music creates an urge to move or dance, which is an incredible way to celebrate.
In my life, music is the major source of inspiration. There is literally no end. I love learning and playing new music of different cultures. The awesomeness of music is boundless. From my experience with classical music I have found that I can express almost anything I want. Recently though, my knowledge of cultural music has increased along with my imagination. To me, music is always growing, and with that growth, it becomes a part of me.
Obviously, one of the ultimate joys I have in life is music. It has affected me as a person in a way which nothing else could. As I have progressed into the musical world, my basic values and beliefs have truly formed. Music is the heart and soul of much of what I live for. It is incredible to be a part of such an amazing phenomenon like that of music.
As the musical opportunities come, my hope is that I can show others what music means to me and what it means to the world. After all, it is much more than just entertainment.
