As an “adventure-school” family we have looked for inexpensive, interesting things to do in Tehama County for the past 16 years. Here are some of our favorite places to go and some that are still on our wish list. Most adventures on this list are free or under $5 a person. A quick internet search will help you find everything you need to go and enjoy these wonderful places in Tehama County!
Ide Adobe, Red Bluff (parks.ca.gov/?page_id=458) Learn about Tehama County’s early pioneer settlers, the Ide family, by touring their visitor center or attending their biannual celebrations.
Sledding Hill, Mineral (minerallodge.com/sledding) Located next to the Lassen Mineral Lodge.
Whitt Hall/Fire Museum, Red Bluff (rbfd.org/museum.html) Visit between 8 am and 5 pm. Special tours can be arranged for large groups.
Gaumer Mineral and Mining Museum, Red Bluff (gaumers.com/gaumers-mineral-and-mining-museum) A jewelry store and lapidary museum.
Lassen National Forest (fs.usda.gov/lassen) Hike Mount Tehama or Brokeoff Volcano. A yearly pass will buy unlimited fun for both Lassen Park and Whiskeytown National Recreation Area.
Oak Hill Cemetery, Red Bluff (redbluffcemetery.com) Cemeteries offer a good place to walk and reflect, and they can spark your child’s interest in local history. Have your child choose a person to research—may I suggest they find and research Peter French, once known as the “Cattle King”?
Manton (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Manton,_California) This drive is especially beautiful in the spring or fall. Watch for deer!
Aquarium and Pets, Red Bluff (aquariumandpets.godaddysites.com) A cheerful pet store. My teenagers still ask to stop in to satisfy their wishful thinking.
Pumpkinland Chocolate Company, Dairyville Picnic in their park-like setting, enjoy free candy samples and three scoops of ice cream for $1.50!
Corning High’s Drill Team performance, May 15, Corning You might find yourself amazed at the skill of this long-running, North State drill team, the Cardettes, as they perform their most popular dances. You will also be treated to several beautiful Corning Ballet Folklorico performances as well.
Abbey of New Clairvaux, Vina (newclairvaux.org) The 800-year-old Chapter House, relocated from Spain, is an architectural marvel in a very peaceful setting.

Dye Creek Preserve, Los Molinos (nature.org/en-us/get-involved/how-to-help/places-we-protect/gray-davisdye-creek-preserve) Call ahead and arrange a hike to Campo Seco Ridge, near where the Yahi once had a village.
Red Gate Ranch, Red Bluff (redgateranch.us) Their free garden tour is May 15, 2019. Ask about their farm-to-table foods and, my favorite, their Tulsi.
And why not add 20 for 2020? Soroptimist International of Red Bluff is raising funds to open a splash park in Red Bluff on Memorial Day, 2020. Learn more at redbluffsplash.com
The ancient word “Tehama” once meant a place where rivers could be crossed. With our county’s rich currents of history, happenings and hope, this is our crossing place today — where we meet to celebrate our beautiful Tehama County.
