Born and raised in Chico, Mendonca warmly remembers how her Notre Dame School fifth grade teacher, Mrs. Beyers, and principal, Sister Jane Golden, uncovered talents in her she didn't know she had. Every morning at Castle Rock Elementary School in the bucolic hamlet of Castella, Superintendent/Principal Mark Telles greets children as they clamber off the school bus, scanning his flock with fatherly concern. If there was a sports event the day before, most likely Mark has posted photos in the hallway. Knowing this, the children run excitedly to see pictures of themselves and their classmates on display.
