Helping Hands – Valley Oak Children’s Services: Strengthening families since 1980

For the past 35 years, Valley Oak Children’s Services (VOCS) has been touching the HEART of children, families, and communities in Butte County through Health, Education, Advocacy, Resources, and Training. A community-based organization that supports anyone raising children, VOCS offers a myriad of services that center around strengthening families.

“VOCS is a strength-based organization that invests in tomorrow’s leaders today,” says Karen Marlatt, the organization’s chief executive officer. “Giving young children and families a healthy foundation early creates success in school and in life.”

VOCS provides free referral services and has child development specialists who are ready to answer questions about ages and stages, or any family related issues.

Their Mobile Library travels throughout Butte County to provide toys & educational materials where transportation is a barrier. VOCS offers help for families in choosing child care, and assistance with child care payments for eligible families who work, go to school, or are in a training program.

The Parent Cafe (funded by First 5 Butte County) offers a family night out in Gridley, Chico and Oroville with a family-style meal, child care and a peer-to-peer Strengthening Families discussion.

For child care providers

VOCS offers a Child Care Food Program to help providers serve nutritious meals to the children in their care and a Child Care Initiative Project to help child care providers start their own business.

The organization also provides a Behavioral Health Program for children up to age 5 who are in child care settings but at risk of losing their placement due to behavior issues. This program provides one to one intervention to assist the child in increasing social/emotional skills that will help them get ready for school.

For child care providers and those seeking responsible child care, VOCS offers Livescan electronic fingerprinting services. The general public can call (800) 315-4507 for an appointment. In addition, VOCS provides TrustLine Registry Services in Butte County. TrustLine is a database of childcare providers who have cleared criminal background checks in California. It is the only authorized screening program in the state with access to fingerprint records at the Department of Justice and FBI.
