Woodstone Construction: An interview with April LaFrance, Chief Financial Officer

art-315-woodstoneWoodStone Construction is a Redding-based general contracting company specializing in remodeling residential homes and customizing commercial spaces. We talked with April LaFrance, WoodStone’s chief financial officer, about the business:

When did WoodStone begin and what was your main motivation for starting your business?

My husband Josh and I built WoodStone Construction in 2011 but we had owned and operated a successful construction company on the East Coast for 11 years before moving to California. We wanted to create a company that would bring great design details to homes and commercial spaces in a city that we had grown to love. We were also enthusiastic about creating new jobs in the North State.

What products or services do you provide, and what makes them special?

Our specialty is remodeling homes and commercial spaces. What’s unique about our company is that we are intentional about incorporating attractive design. My husband Josh grew up working with talented architects on high-end coastal homes in Maine and has an incredible ability to dream up the potential for a space and communicate that vision with clients. WoodStone is also unique in that we have a minimum of 10 craftsmen on staff so we have more control to self-perform our work on time.

Being involved in community is clearly a primary value in both a business and personal sense for you. In what ways are you involved?

We believe the greatest city you’ll ever live in is the one you choose to invest in the most. WoodStone Construction is part of the Chamber of Commerce and the Shasta Builders Exchange. Personally, as the leader of Redding’s Safe City Project (safecityproject.org), I had the opportunity to work with the community to develop ideas to reduce local crime. In 2014 I had the honor of being chosen as one of the North State’s “20 Under 40 Emerging Leaders” by The Record Searchlight. Currently I’m on the board of directors for Advance Redding, which manages the Redding Civic Auditorium, and am on the community advisory board for Mercy Medical Center Redding.

What excites you the most about your business?

The most exciting part about our business is all the opportunities to improve our community. We work with clients who have a huge desire to change something, improve something, or create a new space. We get to put our fingerprints all over a project and that change becomes another puzzle piece in building a stronger and more architecturally beautiful community.
