Improve the Heart of the Home

As the heart of the home, the kitchen is the busiest place in the house. With Americans spending more than half of their time in the kitchen, this room needs to shout “Welcome!”

If your kitchen needs some TLC, here are five reasonable ways to improve the heart of the home without breaking your budget.

  • Brighten up the kitchen with a fresh coat of paint. Be sure the color blends with the other rooms off of the kitchen. Think about the type of paint that would be more beneficial for your family’s lifestyle. Eggshell, satin and semi-gloss are best for high traffic areas because of their stain resistance and ability to be washed.
  • Make it more functional with new lighting. Under-the-cabinet lights shine down on the countertops, making meal preparation easier. Pendant lights can both add flair and provide illumination over a cook’s island. A lighted ceiling fan provides a soft breeze during the spring, early summer and fall months.
  • Replace the often-used sink and faucet. You’ll have a sparkling new look and eliminate annoying drips at the same time. There are many choices on the market today with a number of price points – from a standard single bowl to the popular farm sinks. Decide if a stainless steel sink fits your budget and style, or splurge on a porcelain or granite bowl.
  • Give your kitchen cabinets a quick improvement by replacing the existing hardware. New handles, pulls and hinges can transform an outdated kitchen with a whole new look. Take the old hardware with you when purchasing new items so you can match up existing mounting holes.
  • Take the cabinet update one step further by painting or refinishing them. You can also reface or replace your cabinet doors. You’ll want to match the hues of the veneers and keep the wood style similar to the rest of your kitchen.  Gather step-by-step information before attempting the task; check your local home improvement store for kits and products that can make the job easier. You can simplify things by hiring a professional service like Granite Transformations to reface cabinets (and countertops) in just one or two days (see page 14 for information).

These practical and reasonable improvements can give your kitchen a wonderful new appearance that welcomes your family into the heart of the home.
