Families in Business: Adventure Recreation Center

Are you wondering where to take your family for some active play time that will be fun for all of you? Look no further than the Adventure Recreation Center located in Anderson, California.

Adventure Recreation was started by Andrea and Matt Ivey, a husband and wife team. Both have degrees in recreation administration and love working with kids. They met while working at Boys and Girls clubs in 2005 and knew they wanted to provide fun and active recreation for youth and people of all ages. They have been working together ever since!

Opening in 2010, the Adventure Recreation Center started with stand up paddle board and mobile rock wall rentals. The business expanded into gymnastics after they purchased Athletics Unlimited Gymnastics in March of 2012; Andrea loves the sport and shares, “I have had a passion for gymnastics my whole life, and have always returned to coaching in each of the communities I’ve lived in.”

art-0814-adv2With an array of activities for children, teens and adults, Adventure Recreation offers something fun for everyone, including their popular “Tricks and Flips” and other gymnastics classes, open gyms, day camps, birthday parties, and stand up paddle board lessons and tours. Classes are open to the public; some on a drop-in basis, and others by monthly tuition.

The center also offers a safe place for teens and young adults to do flips and tricks, and just have fun hanging out together, every Monday and Friday night, for $5 per person.

The Ivey’s are active in the community, volunteering their time for local events such as paddle board races and community fundraisers. They also offer gymnastics demonstrations; at last year’s circus-themed event at the Cottonwood Library, Adventure Recreation provided a live acrobatic display of flips and tricks. The Ivey’s frequently donate gift certificates to local fundraisers and enjoy attending the events.

Two-year-old daughter Makena loves being part of the family business, showing other children around and sharing snacks at the center’s snack bar!

Visit Adventure Recreation’s website or drop by the center to check it out on weekdays from 3:30-7:30pm; call for special summer hours.
