Antique Cottage & Garden

As Lynni Miller gazed out the window at a lot full of weeds across from Northern California dental office she worked at, she thought about a project in New York City that had transformed “difficult-to-look-at” areas into gardens. Lynni knew if it could be done in the Bronx, it could be done in her tiny town of Shasta Lake City.

Through the Shasta Lake Garden Project, Lynni’s dream of providing beauty and education through community gardens became a reality. Her dream continued to develop when she was asked to create a garden area for a Shasta Lake antique shop and to become a vendor.

“I had a blast revamping the neglected space with  ‘old world’ garden ornaments and uncommon plants,” Lynni says. “I wanted people to be able to sit down, relax and get away from the stresses of life …  a romantic ideal.”

The garden became the greatest source of revenue for the business, and when the owners decided to sell the business seven years ago, Lynni “took the plunge,” and became owner of Antique Cottage & Garden. She quickly discovered a knack for creating romantic environments indoors too.

Her mission statement, says Lynni, “is that everyone who walks through the front door has the experience of love & inspiration.” “The Cottage,” as the shop is referred to, features an eclectic mix of antique, vintage and new items for home and garden, showcased in delightful ways so customers can take home decorating ideas as well as new treasures. Each room in The Cottage is decorated with a theme, including kitchen, nautical, weddings,  and a “man’s room.”

What Lynni enjoys most is knowing her shop is making a difference in people’s lives. “There’s scientific evidence that the experience of nostalgia produces endorphins in the brain that make you feel good, and there’s a psychology to one’s surroundings,” she explains. “Finding things you want to incorporate into your living space to make you feel good is important in my book!”

She and her  husband enjoy finding treasures for the shop when they travel. “I find immense satisfaction in discovering and buying something I love,” she says, “then having someone else discover it in my shop who loves it enough to take it home to create a beautiful space with it.”

Lynni also offers off-site tours such as a Flea Market Tour to Provence, France, this May or June. She’s currently planning a March 22 progressive dinner fundraiser to be able to make a lucky someone’s dream come true with a tour scholarship.

Additionally, Antique Cottage & Garden is available as a venue for photo shoots, vintage furniture and decor rentals for weddings, and offers a bridal registry. “The Cottage has given me the opportunity to express my creativity in so many ways,” Lynni says. “I am living my dream.”
