The school year is well underway and your child may be experiencing new challenges such as writing an English paper, understanding math concepts or improving study skills; or may need assessment of a learning problem. Where can students in the North State region find specialized tutorial assistance and have their learning problems assessed? Here are tutoring and learning center resources that can assist children, teens, and in some cases adults, with their learning needs:

Butte County

 

JEI Learning Center, Chico

JEI is an internationally based learning center that has developed a supplementary education system based on their Self-Learning Method. Students take a diagnostic test before starting programs based on their individual needs. Services are offered on a month-to-month basis. Tutors are certified teachers, college students taking higher math or English classes, and English and math students enrolled in master’s programs at CSU, Chico.
Grade Levels: PreK-9.
Specialties: Four programs: English; reading and writing; general math; and problem-solving math.
Rate: $120 per subject per month.

Lyon Books, Chico

For ten years Lyon Books has offered a special tutoring program providing one-on-one tutoring for elementary school students. The bookstore has a classroom separate from the main store area. All teachers are experienced, credentialed teachers.
Grade Levels: K-6; occasionally 9-12.
Specialty: All academic areas.
Rates: $30 per hour; $40 evaluation fee for new students.

Shasta County

 

Abba’s Child Learning Center, Anderson

Abba’s Child offers individualized programs for students who may be experiencing learning difficulties. The center specializes in identifying and resolving learning problems such as dyslexia, ADD/ADHD, and auditory and visual processing disorders. The directors Judith and Roberto D’Amico both hold master’s degrees in counseling psychology.
Grade Levels: All grades, plus adults.
Specialty: Retraining how the brain processes information, overcoming blocks to learning, and restoring students’ self-esteem.
Rate: $35 per hour.

Chinese Made Easy, Redding   

Yen Walters loves to teach Chinese (in Mandarin) and makes learning easy and fun. After graduation from GuangXi Teachers College, she taught elementary school for many years in her hometown, Nanning. Yen immigrated to the United States in 1998, and in 2006 earned her Bachelor of Science in business administration from California State University, Bakersfield. Yen has lived in Redding with her family for the past four years. She hosts a new monthly bilingual storytime at the Redding Library.
Grade Levels: Pre-K and up; adults too.
Specialty: Chinese lessons; also teaches math in Chinese.
Rates: $15 per half-hour individually or $10 each per half-hour in groups of four to ten.

Parsons Tutoring Services & Music Lessons, Redding

Debra Parsons is the owner of Parsons Tutoring Services and Music Lessons. She has an extensive background in music instruction and experience in teaching every subject to ages pre-K through 12th grade. Debra holds a master’s degree in music education, and teaching credentials in music and general education (pre-K through college).
Grade Levels: Pre K-6.
Specialty: Language arts, math, geography, history; music (piano, guitar, violin, cello and voice).

Professional Tutoring, Mt. Shasta

Truely Hutchinson offers a broad array of services in her private tutoring practice. She provides homework help, hands-on experiences, and instruction for Brigham Young University courses in mathematics. She holds a bachelor of science degree in mathematics, a California multiple subject teaching credential and a California reading certificate.
Grade Levels: K-12.
Specialty: Mathematics (elementary math, algebra, and higher level math courses), language arts, reading, writing.

Barbara Shepard, Dunsmuir

Barbara Shepard offers a K-12 homeschoolers tutoring program through Mattole Valley Charter School. She also provides tutoring on an individual basis, and can coordinate services with other qualified tutors. With over 30 years of experience, she provides students a nurturing learning environment. Barbara is an education specialist at Mattole Valley Charter School, holds a multiple subject teaching credential, and has California High Objective Uniform State Standard of Evaluation (HOUSSE) approval in all high school subjects.

Grade Level: K-12.
Specialty: Mathematics, teaches all subjects, in-house program.
